A Poor Imitation of an Italian

If anyone asks me what my heritage is, I tell them that I am Italian. This is not factually true. I was adopted, so I was raised by an Italian family, but there’s a pretty good chance that I don’t have a drop of Italian blood in me. Now, I blend in with my family quite well. I’m a tan-complexioned, loud-talking, loud-sneezing, family-oriented girl who can debate anyone about anything and cook pretty well. But there’s one thing about me that is very un-Italian.

I don’t eat very much.

I have less than two weeks before I move into my first apartment. I’ll be completely responsible for all my own meals (minus lunches on weekdays, which are blessedly provided by the school I’m working for.) Now, it’s completely normal to be a bit nervous about living on your own. Most people are worried about things like what they’ll do in an emergency, or who will take care of their pets if they get sick, or who will take care of the home maintenance tasks they’re not skilled at. Me? I have different worries. One of them involves making sure that I eat enough.

Most people know when they’re hungry, and they respond appropriately by grabbing a snack. Me? I’m lucky if my body tells me it needs food. I’ll be doing something (or doing nothing, daydreaming and wasting time on my phone whilst procrastinating from packing) and I’ll notice that my head and my stomach feel a bit weird. Then I’ll look down at my phone and realize that it’s one in the afternoon and I haven’t eaten lunch yet. My dad says I should set an alarm on my phone so I remember to eat, but I’ve lived with my sister for so long that I’m very used to ignoring loud and annoying things.

I am, at best, a very poor imitation of an Italian.

That said, I want to improve. I’m going to try meal prepping. I know that breakfasts are very important, as they give me the energy I need to teach. I have a few recipes for overnight oats, and I’m thinking about trying breakfast burritos. The problem is that I’ll have to leave my duplex around 7:15 (if not before) every morning, so I’ll either have to eat before my stomach is awake, or eat in the car, or eat at my desk while hurriedly prepping for the day. One of my students has a severe peanut allergy, and while I’m pretty sure I’ll have him later in the day, I’m still not comfortable bringing a breakfast containing peanuts to the school.

  1. I eat eggs and bacon or spam most of the time. I like oatmeal at times as well. I do like to make my own smoothies though.
